The Murdoch Residence exemplifies the harmonious blend of heritage respect and contemporary design innovation. Built on a steep site, we preserved the existing 1970s basement and footprint, minimising environmental impact while creating a foundation for architectural excellence.
The home's design language balances classical and modern elements, featuring delicate arches and detailed mouldings alongside contemporary black frames and a minimalist colour scheme. At its heart, a dramatic double-height living area connects seamlessly with a wet-edge pool, creating dynamic interactions between light and water. Expansive windows capture park views while preserving the mature tree canopy that characterises the property.
When structural challenges emerged, particularly around the double-void space above the basement carport, collaboration with engineers led to an innovative steel portal frame solution that maintained double-brick construction while ensuring cost efficiency.
The market response exceeded expectations, with over 1,200 visitors during the four-week marketing campaign. The auction achieved a suburb record of $7.501 million—$1.2 million above the previous record—remarkable for a property without a tennis court. This success reflects the value of thoughtful architectural design prioritising spatial quality and refined detailing.
The project delivered strong commercial outcomes with a development profit of $1.05 million and 36.3% ROI.
Our commitment to quality extended to material selection, favouring Australian products to support local industry and reduce carbon footprint. The project's success has generated new opportunities, with underbidders approaching us for custom residential projects.
